I’m going to write an entry that has almost nothing to do with Exie. Life for her parents goes on, too, you know.
Susan is a foodie. And we both like various types of games. So once in a while food-ness and game-ness collide in an interesting fashion. My last birthday, for example, involved a wide variety of food games. This is ironic, because I am the least food-qualified of the people that were there and managed to finish second-to-last (somehow Jody fared even worse than I did in the blind food identification round).
the contestants
Anyway… Stella and Spencer came over today, which was great because they always hold Exie a lot, so we get a bit of a break. After lunch, somebody suggested that we get cupcakes. While trying to decide where to buy cupcakes, we decided that it would be a better idea to do a taste comparison between the two local cupcake powerhouses (Sprinkles and Kara’s). So Spencer and I set off to fetch. Actually, it would be more accurate to say that Spencer was out the door before I could even find my shoes.
Sprinkles is a national chain, and is in Stanford Shopping Mall. The line was out the door, and apparently it usually is. Crazy. If it wasn’t for undying love for my wife (and having Spencer as company), I would never wait in line to buy cupcakes like I’m trying to get a rock star’s autograph. But hey, the cupcakes looked really good and all the crazy people in line were preaching about how great they were. We bought four.
Then we went to Kara’s, which is much more down to earth. They’re a chain, too, but much smaller and only local (San Fran and the peninsula). There was a line here, too, but it was only two people long. That’s more like it. We chose four that sorta’-kinda’ matched up against the ones we bought at Sprinkles.
the carnage
I won’t bore you with the details of the scoring, but suffice it to say it took us a while to figure out a good system for determining the winner. The cupcakes duked it out in a variety of categories, and there were also some overall parameters on which they were judged. Personally, I was pretty sure that slick-polished-longline Sprinkles was going to trounce the local shop. But after the dust settled, all four of us preferred Kara’s over Sprinkles. All four of us were also sick to our stomachs. WAY too much sugar.
But hey… at least we got a memorable experience out of it.
