from zero to
Exie...

“poppa!”

Could the quotes in the title possibly mean that Exie has managed to say “Poppa!”? (I never have figured out how to punctuate sentences like that – there must be a rule somewhere.) But in answer to the question, of course not. She is only 5 months old, people! If you’re a parent, or knowledgeable regarding these things, you wouldn’t have been fooled for a second, but maybe I had some of you baby-neophytes going.

Recently I’ve been getting up pretty early (usually between 4am and 5am). I’ve always been an early riser (though not usually quite that early), and these days it’s a good time for me to get some stuff done before Exie gets up. Sometime around 7am, I fetch Exie and let Susan go back to sleep for a while. But this doesn’t happen at exactly the same time every day, so Susan usually calls out, “Paaaaapaaaa!” to let me know Exie is ready to be swooped out of bed. She might have to do this a couple times if the heater’s on and I’ve forgotten to turn on the baby monitor (which in this case is more like a baby-and-mommy monitor, or just a lump of useless plastic if it’s not turned on). In the past, when I’ve arrived Exie is usually on her side, facing Susan, which means she is facing away from the door. Susan then looks at the door and says, “It’s Poppa!” And then I come over and we all give each other good-morning-smooches, and then I take Exie downstairs.

But recently, I’ve been quietly coming in right around 7am, before Susan calls me. So I’m actually already secretly in the room when she calls out, “Paaaapaaaa!” Then I say something so that Exie knows I’m there. Originally, I’d have to come over and touch her before she looked at me, but then she started turning her head after I spoke to her. But today, for the first time, she turned her head to find me after Susan called out, but before I had made a noise! Awesome (it really is the little things that make parents’ hearts go boom).

And as a side note, she inevitably laughs with glee when she sees me for the first time in the morning, which pretty much makes my whole day, no matter how many trucks run over me later on.
