Here’s a sound track to play while you’re reading this post. It’s Exie saying goodnight to lambie, her little stuffed-animal/blanket:

test-driving the cat “costume”
Exie’s first Halloween. She was a pink fluffy cat, sorta’. To be honest, I have always thought that it is a little strange when babies are dressed up in complicated costumes for Halloween. Yes, they’re very cute, but I worry that they are uncomfortable, and it kinda’ reminds me of dressing up your dog (all together now: “Grace, you’re a mean old grouch”). So when Susan suggested that we just use a big fluffy suit that Brian & Gina gave us instead of a proper costume, I agreed immediately. Don’t worry; next year I’ll get more into the spirit.
On Halloween afternoon, we went over to the Bramers’ house. The Bramers are Lisan (Susan’s sister), Jody, Bo, & Belle), and we were also joined by some more of Lisan’s friends, with kids and without. Belle was also a cat, and Bo was a big eye. Lisan always makes some pretty great costumes for them (on that subject, my brother Dug’s kids also have awesome home-made costumes every year, but maybe I’ll cover that topic next year).
Jody has been growing humongous pumpkins this year. It’s funny; they live in a swank Los Gatos neighborhood and their front yard looks like the pumpkin version of Jack-and-the-beanstalk with all those over-sized monstrosities growing in a big patch of dirt instead of a lawn. Right on. Jody and Bo took the biggest ones to the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival to enter them in the yearly contest. They weighed in at a whopping 269 and 220 pounds. I was amazed to learn that they didn’t even come close to winning; first place was a staggering 1,524 pounds. Zowie. Carve THAT one.
Anyways, after it got dark we plopped Exie in the Bjorn carrier and all did a small walk around the neighborhood loop. Of course, Exie didn’t collect any candy since she doesn’t have teeth yet, but this resulted, in the true spirit of trick-or-treat, in her spending the entire evening cruelly vandalizing expensive Los Gatos residences.
the great pumpkin
