unexpected hospital visit

This is unexpected. We went in for a routine check-up with Dr. Hsiao on April 30 and were surprisingly admitted to the hospital. We’re at about 28 weeks now and Susan’s been having contractions for some time now, though they haven’t been strong.

Unfortunately, due to a previous operation, Susan’s cervix is now much shorter than it should be at this point in the pregnancy. We knew this would be an issue, but up until now it seemed like it was okay. Thankfully, Dr. Hsiao (whom we’ve switched back to, now that she’s doing births again) just had a hunch that we should check Susan’s cervix length (she wasn’t actually scheduled for another ultrasound for a few more weeks). The ultrasound revealed that her cervix length is only 1.3cm, and thus we were admitted to the hospital.

Basically, the goal is to try to stop the contractions (via some common drugs) and keep the weight of the baby off the cervix (via sitting in bed all day). So we’re here until further notice, and hopefully things will turn out okay.

As a side note, we were supposed to move into our new place in Palo Alto yesterday, but obviously that is just going to have to wait.
