from zero to
Exie...

tiny-baby-mommy

Susan got a new nickname today. Here’s how it went down:

We’re members at a local baby store called Day One. They sell all sorts of baby stuffs, and they also hold workshops and various playgroups and such. On Thursdays there’s a playgroup for 6- to 12-month olds. We hadn’t gone yet ’cause Exie’s been kinda’ sick and we’ve had some other things happening on some of the Thursdays (like naps or meltdowns mostly). So we went for the first time today.

It was a good experience. There were some parents (mostly moms) that we had previously met at a similar group shortly after Exie was born, but most of the folks there today were new faces for us. Exie was more adventuresome than we thought she’d be, and after acclimating for a short period, she started wandering towards the center of the circle to do battle with various other baby gladiators over random pieces of cloth, plastic, and wood, all heavily coated in saliva. It seems, even at this age, that the value of an item goes up exponentially with each additional baby that wants to play with it. Exie was a bit smaller than the other babies, but she held her own just fine.

So the hour passed relatively quickly, and as we were getting up to leave, Susan was invited to the monthly mom’s night out, which just so happened to be tonight. It was bowling this time, but next time it will be manicures and pedicures – you get the idea. (As an aside, I wasn’t invited to anything, but that’s a different topic.)

Fast forward to Susan returning from ladies bowling night. I proudly welcome her home, baby safely sleeping. Yay me. And she proceeds to tell me a story from bowling night. Okay, she tells me several stories, but I’m only passing one of them on – aren’t you lucky (no Klondike bar for you).

So when Susan enters bowling night, one of the other moms turned to a friend and says, “I don’t recognize her. Who is she?” (My theory on this is that she didn’t recognize Susan ’cause she was all hotted up for ladies night out, as opposed to how she looked at playgroup, which is more like a Yoga instructor.) Anyway, her friend replies, “You just met her today! She’s Tiny-Baby-Mommy, remember?” This is all recounted to Susan later, with the added confession from the same mom that when we first arrived at playgroup, she thought to herself, “‘Why are they bringing their 3-month old to a 6- to 12-month playgroup?” But then when Exie started zooming around the floor, the mom realized she must be about the same age as all the other babies there.

So now Susan is officially Tiny-Baby-Mommy. But seriously… Exie may be on the small side, but she’s not *that* small. We’re trying not to worry about it, but hey, we’re first time parents, so we excel at worrying. So it’s tempting to give her formula for one meal a day to see if she bulks up a bit. But that means more baby to carry around… and isn’t there a saying about good things coming in small packages?
